What’s Growing: Kitchen window gift - The Ledger

It seems that Black Friday sales focused on one item in the home, the big-screen television. There is another place in the home that I always tell clients I am designing for to consider, and that is the view from the kitchen window. It is a spot that some family members spend a lot of time at.

The kitchen sink is often at the kitchen window and time spent prepping food and washing dishes is spent there. A pleasant view outside the kitchen window can help menial tasks seem less boring.

If you are at a loss for what to get the chief cook and bottle washer this holiday season, consider an engaging item to put in the view from the kitchen windows.

For clients, I try to place a flowering perennial such a hibiscus, buddleia, firebush or plumbago, which will attract butterflies and hummingbirds. The activity at the plant can engage onlookers as they are working on culinary projects.

Another option is to place a bird feeder in the line of sight from the kitchen. Not only can it provide entertainment, but you may aid stressed bird populations. A recent report cited that since 1970 bird populations have had a 29% decline of some 3 billion birds. The gift of a bird feeder with an ample supply of seed can provide multiple benefits.

As you are enjoying delicious foods through the holidays, don’t forget the thoughtful hands that prepared them. Do something that will entertain them while doing meal preparation like enhancing the view from the kitchen window. It is a gift that will be frequently enjoyed throughout the year.
