Odell Beckham Jr. said he was upset with the referees when he blew up on the sidelines next to Freddie Kitchens in a Sunday scene that quickly went viral.
Beckham told reporters his rage stemmed from officials warning him, following his touchdown celebration, that one more personal foul would cause him to be removed from Cleveland’s 31-15 loss to the Ravens.
Many social media observers, however, concluded Beckham was letting Kitchens have it for his play call on a two-point attempt, which failed after backup tight end Ricky Seals-Jones dropped the ball in the middle of the fourth quarter.
Beckham threw his helmet on the sideline after the miss, and then got in Kitchen’s ear while gesturing to the field.
Kitchens also downplayed the episode, which came a week after Jarvis Landry got into a heated exchange with Kitchens and demanded the ball more.
It’s been a hectic season for Cleveland, which at 6-9 has underperformed after the sky-high expectations that came with the arrival of Beckham from the Giants last spring.
Beckham reportedly has wanted out of Cleveland, but this week guaranteed reporters “I’m not going anywhere,” after being told by the Browns he wouldn’t be traded. The 27-year-old is in the second season of a five-year, $95 million contract he signed with the Giants.
