She calls herself the Queen of Southern Cooking. Her outgoing and friendly nature puts the “all” in y’all. And she just opened a new restaurant at Downtown OWA in Foley. Who am I talking about? Why none other than the one and only Paula Deen.
This past Monday, the South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce and the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber held a grand opening and ribbon cutting celebration at the new Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen, effectively capping off what has been an extraordinary year for OWA in grand openings and new attractions.
Minutes before the celebration, I had an opportunity to interview Paula Deen herself. I had so many questions, but I really wanted to know which was her favorite dish.
“It’s all so good,” Deen said. “You can’t ask a fat girl what her favorite food is. You kinda look at her and tell she likes it all. I got back to the food being prepared. It’s so right on the money. Our fried chicken, you’ll never taste fried chicken any better.”
But she didn’t stop at the fried chicken.

“Our pork chop, I have a pork chop every time I walk through one of our doors,” Deen said. “They are delicious. The fried okra and the fried green tomatoes will make your tongue want to slap your brains out, I am not kidding.”
The 8,000-square-foot establishment can seat up to 290 people and radiates an atmosphere of southern charm and hospitality. While the floor to ceiling windows, vaulted ceilings, and walls splashed with periwinkle invite you to stay awhile, it’s the gift shop that steals the show—making you want to take home a Christmas tree ornament fashioned into a stick of butter that says “Butter Y’all.”
For Deen, it’s all about staying true to her southern brand. Because of this, everything at Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen is served family-style. There are no take out boxes, and the only thing you can take home with you is the dessert.
“I think they can expect to be brought back to another time,” Deen said. “And the way we serve is like our memories of our childhood. When our grandmothers put everything in bowls and brought it to the table, and there’s a good chance that none of the bowls matched. But our bowls do match.”
Deen says people will be surprised once they walk through the doors.
“I think people will be surprised at the staff, because my brand is all about southern hospitality, all about that,” Deen said. “You go in some businesses and they act like you’re doing them a favor by coming in. It does not work that way. We appreciate our guests that come in so much, and hopefully, they’ll be able to feel the love that we have for them.”
Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen is located in Downtown OWA in Foley, AL, at 203 N. OWA Boulevard, and is open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
