The holiday season can bring out the best in people and remind them that you can always give back to those in need

NewsChannel 9 spoke with folks at the Community Kitchen on Wednesday, which is one of the only facilities open on the holiday.

Many of us woke up to presents under the Christmas tree, but sometimes it's that gift you can't see that means the most.

Folks gathered for a warm holiday meal.

Barry Dent said, if he could, there's just one thing he'd ask Santa for.

“My two front teeth,” said Dent.

Jens Christensen, the CEO of the Community Kitchen, said these volunteers will serve food to nearly 800 people on Christmas Day.

“And wants to make sure that every child, homeless, housed, precariously housed, hungry, they have something from Santa and a chance to sit and talk to him,” said Christensen.

Christensen said the holiday season can be hard for some people and exciting for others.

For Dent, it's a time to love yourself and support those around you.

“Just love one another. No matter how hard it is, forgive. You gotta forgive, you know,” said Dent.

It is that expression of love that brought two 10-year-old siblings to the Community Kitchen to give back on Wednesday.

“We might not change the world, but we might change these people’s world,” said Isaac Muriente.

Isaac and Natalia Muriente said it was their first time volunteering at the kitchen, and they were nervous.

However, seeing the smiles on people’s faces as they brought water to their tables, made them feel the Christmas spirit.

“And I think wow, even in their unfortunate state they can still have joy at Christmas,” said Natalia.

Christensen said nearly 150 kids came this morning to get presents from Santa.

When we asked these two what they got for Christmas, they said they'd prefer not to answer because they wanted to stay humble. They're here to spread a different message.

“We're all people, no matter what race, what trials we're facing, we are all humans and we are supposed to help eachother,” said Natalia.

Jens Christensen said it's not just during the holidays that folks are in need, it's year-round.

The kitchen is accepting donations of canned food, winter items and hygiene products.

If you'd like to donate your time or items they need, check out the Community Kitchen website.
