The Spindle Kitchen at Studioplex Alley in the Old Fourth Ward hosts Puerto Rican food pop-up My Abuelas for a year-long kitchen residency, starting Tuesday, February 4.
My Abuelas, run by chefs Luis Martinez and Monica Martinez, serves dishes inspired by recipes from the chefs’ grandmothers. Think sancocho boricua (beef and root vegetable stew), fried sweet plantains, sorullitos (fried corn sticks), and pigeon pea soup served with tostones. Valeria Sanchez and Belkys Perez, the mother and daughter team behind bakery business La Dolce Madness Baked Goods, are providing all the pastries for the Spindle Kitchen.
Both My Abuelas and La Dolce Madness have been popping up together around Atlanta since October 2018. Their first pop-up at the Spindle Kitchen was in March 2019.
“We feel this combo with Luis and Monica will allow the space to be more focused on what each entity thrives at, thanks for riding along and ready to fill you up,” a post to the Spindle’s Instagram account reads. “We’ll ease into February with some soft pops but March we’ll go full bore!”
Over the last two years, the Spindle has opened its kitchen to a number of food pop-ups and local chefs, including 8Arm chef Maricela Vega and her Meso-American pop-up Chicomecóatl, Billy Kramer’s NFA Burger, and Osono Bread owner and baker Betsy Gonzalez.
The Spindle Kitchen resides behind cycling shop the Spindle at Studioplex and offers seating at communal tables and the bar.
