CLEVELAND, Ohio - Tickets are on sale for A Taste of Black Cleveland: The Food Showcase 3.0 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
The event is the latest step in the Launch Test Kitchen event that was held the previous two years at the arena. It's a chance for minority chefs to try dishes that potentially could work in the rotational eatery space on the arena's main concourse.
The event is 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10.
Tickets are $30 and covers admission to the food showcase and to the 76ers-Cavs game on Wednesday, Feb. 26.
The first two years the showcase was a private event where the Cavs and food-provider Aramark partnered with the NAACP. This year, that partnership continues as a public event with 20 chefs who own local restaurants, food trucks and catering businesses. They will converge and cook in Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. Proceeds benefit the Cleveland NAACP's Afro-Academic Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO), an achievement program, as well as the Cavaliers Community Foundation.
Participating chefs will include the five highest vote-getters at the 2019 event. They will prepare signature dishes for guests to eat and vote on based on quality, variety and presentation. Winners will receive cash and prizes along with consideration for a presence among the food options at the arena. Participants also gain business-development training and networking opportunities with industry professionals.
The event allows and encourages creativity from the chefs. Concession offerings in an arena or stadium have become more diverse in recent years, and that trend is continuing. Last year, chipotle street corn, turkey ribs with peach and apricot-infused barbecue sauce and many other flavorful dishes were served.
Several previous winners have a presence in the revamped arena. Pearl’s Kitchen from Tiwanna Scott-Williams, a 2017 winner, is on the main street-level concourse. Vic Searcy (Sauce The City) and Sonia Steele (Vegan Vicki) have items on menus in the arena's Budweiser Brew House, new this season.
The Launch Test Kitchen near section 126 is equipped to deftly change its infrastructure from signage to grills to accommodate an entirely different menu game to game, concert to concert. The thinking is crowds attending Cavs or Monsters games, country-music concerts, family productions and other events may want different menu items.
Winners at the event on Feb. 10 will be recognized on court at the 76ers-Cavs game on Feb. 26. That game will be the season's final Black Heritage Celebration. The other BHC theme nights at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse:
Monday Jan. 20: 5 p.m. vs. New York Knicks
Saturday, Feb. 1: 8 p.m. vs. Golden State Warriors
Wednesday, Feb. 12: 7 p.m. vs. Atlanta Hawks
