Tanya Holland, the first black person to have a food business at San Francisco’s Ferry Building, is closing the doors to the property’s Brown Sugar Kitchen on Jan. 19. The restaurant was open for less than a year.
Holland’s flagship Brown Sugar Kitchen in Uptown Oakland will not be affected by the Ferry Building closure.
“Being an entrepreneur means taking big risks and trying new things, and I'm proud of what we put forward at Brown Sugar Kitchen in The Ferry Building,” Holland said in a statement emailed to The Chronicle.
Holland’s Ferry Building location marked a new chapter in the chef’s dazzling career when she announced it in 2018 — it represented her push to establish Brown Sugar Kitchen as a national soul food empire. The buzz around the brand, which first opened as a small restaurant in West Oakland in 2008, gained momentum in early 2019.
By January, Holland had opened Uptown Oakland’s Brown Sugar Kitchen at 2295 Broadway and celebrated the restaurant’s 11-year anniversary. Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf was one of several city officials in attendance at the grand opening.
One month later, Holland started selling her boxes of $18 chicken and waffles and $4 buttermilk biscuits at the Ferry Building. There were consistently long lines during the first week it was open.
But the growth of Brown Sugar Kitchen as a soul food empire hasn't come without setbacks over the last three years. To move to her spacious Uptown Oakland location, Holland had to close her West Oakland restaurant. Bay Area chef Matt Horn is now opening a barbecue spot at the property.
Holland was also once juggling possible projects at Levi’s Stadium, Chase Center, and both the Oakland International Airport and the San Francisco International Airport, all of which have yet to come to fruition.
In the end, the Ferry Building experience was about more than just running a restaurant in a tourist-friendly area, Holland continued in the email.
“While we’re disappointed to step back from Brown Sugar Kitchen's counter concept, I'm personally deeply proud to have established the first black female-owned restaurant in the iconic San Francisco Ferry Building,” she said.
As for what’s next, Holland said she’s “working on some exciting new opportunities” that she plans to announce in the coming months.
