DRACUT — For Four Oaks Country Club, a new year will mean a few new amenities.
In January, the business plans to begin construction on a 34 by 60 foot addition to the southwest-facing side of the building, which looks out on its golf course and Clubhouse Lane, according to owners Cindy and Michael Kuenzler.
The Kuenzlers bought the business out of bankruptcy in 2012, and since then have completed extensive renovations to the property, they said. This latest project will allow them to create a dedicated kitchen for events, as well as a bridal suite for weddings and some additional storage space.
Until now, the club has been operating with one kitchen for both of its restaurants and all of its events, and it’s sometimes a tight squeeze. Four Oaks hosts roughly 25 to 50 events per month depending on the season, ranging from baby showers and birthday parties to corporate events, Michael Kuenzler said. That can create a strain on the kitchen if multiple events are happening at the same time and the restaurants are also open.
“So on a typical Saturday night, especially during the summer, you’ve got pub food coming out to the Bar and Grille, you’ve got Italian food coming out to the Grazie Italian Restaurant, and then you’ve got an event going on,” he said.
The new kitchen will be located in part of the space where the Bar and Grille currently sits, and the restaurant will be partially relocated to the new addition, which will also house the bridal suite. The pub will be roughly the same size as it is now, though the owners expect the layout to be a bit more functional after it’s moved, they said.
The club’s upscale restaurant, Grazie Italian Restaurant, will not be affected by the project, and the Bar and Grille will stay open throughout most of construction, which is slated to be completed sometime in April, depending on weather. If the pub does need to close briefly during the transition, the owners plan to temporarily extend Grazie’s hours to include lunchtime dining, they said.
Both restaurants and the golf course are open to the public, and the club also has a membership program giving access to exclusive benefits such as advanced golf reservations. There are currently about 120 members, according to Michael Kuenzler.
The new event kitchen will be located directly across from the existing event space, providing easier access for staff. But the biggest benefit will be having the additional space and equipment, the Kuenzlers said.
“The chefs sometimes will have to come in at four in the morning just so that they’ve got that open equipment. And once they’re there, they’re still staying until after the event anyway,” Michael Kuenzler said. “So it will make more sense that way, because they’ll be able to come in more regular with regular hours now. It’ll be a little bit of a cost savings on that.”
Though Four Oaks already hosts a significant number of weddings, the Kuenzlers said there’s not currently a space for bridal parties to wait and get ready before the ceremony. The bridal suite will fill that need, while also providing a space for wedding parties to take photos indoors on days when the weather won’t allow an outdoor shoot.
“On a rainy day, right now we don’t really have a good offering for pictures,” Cindy Kuenzler said.
The owners said they’re considering hosting some sort of grand opening when the project is completed —perhaps tied to a sporting event — and also plan to add a few updates to the Bar and Grille’s menu. The staff are already excited for the project to be completed, they said.
“We’ve talked about it for a long time,” Michael Kuenzler said. “It’s always been high on the priority for the chefs and the cooks, because it’s going to make their job easier, really.
