Hell's Kitchen from chef Gordon Ramsay opens Jan. 8 at Lake Tahoe; he might visit in March - Reno Gazette Journal

Starting Jan. 8, folks are going to Hell.

That's when Gordon Ramsay, the globally celebrated chef and restaurateur, opens his latest Hell's Kitchen restaurant, this time in Harveys Lake Tahoe in Stateline.

The spot, which takes its name from Ramsay's hit reality TV show, ranks among the most anticipated restaurant debuts ever in Northern Nevada, with more than 12,000 reservations made by the third week of December 2019, according to the casino.

Hell's Kitchen will be open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday.

In late August, the hotel-casino announced the debut of the restaurant, the third Hell's Kitchen for Ramsay.

"I went to Lake Tahoe three times, and we scouted the area. Saw the atmosphere in summer. Saw the atmosphere in winter," Ramsay said recently in an interview in Las Vegas, adding that Lake Tahoe reminded him of a favorite ski resort in the southern French Alps.

The chef is scheduled to attend a separate grand opening of Hell's Kitchen "when his schedule permits, which looks like late March," said John Packer, head of communications at Harveys and Harrah's at Tahoe.

Making Hell out of a classic Lake Tahoe space

The first Hell's Kitchen debuted at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in 2018. A second spot opened its doors in Caesars Bluewaters in Dubai this past spring.

Hell's Kitchen occupies the former Sage Room, a classic steakhouse that opened in 1947, when the property was Harveys Wagon Wheel casino. The Sage Room, in turn, is taking its chops upstairs to the 19 Kitchen & Bar space atop Harveys.

(Longtime local food enthusiasts will remember that 19 Kitchen used to be Llewellyn's, a fine dining spot that paired a white-and-gilt Frenchy feel with panoramic Tahoe views.)

Menu will include familiar dishes from TV show

The new Hell's Kitchen will marry a bit of the old with all of the new.

Sage Room's wooden beams — hewn from trees cleared when the original Harveys was built in the 1940s — will be left intact.

The menu, however, will offer many dishes featured on the TV show, including signature items like pan-seared scallops, lobster risotto, crisp skin salmon, beef Wellington and sticky toffee pudding.

Hell's Kitchen is part of $41 million in capital projects at the casino that also includes a new casino bar and lounge and renovation of all 519 guest rooms in the property's Lake Tower.
