Freddie Kitchens won't get a second chance with the Cleveland Browns.
The team fired the rookie head coach on Sunday after a 6-10 season, making him the 11th coach since 2000 to last only one year with an organization.
"I would like to thank Freddie for his dedication and efforts this past season," general manager John Dorsey said in a statement. "We are disappointed in our results and feel a change is necessary. Freddie is a good man and good football coach. We wish he and his family nothing but success."
Cleveland will now be in search of its sixth different full-time head coach since 2013.
The dismissal marks another reset for the organization with the league's longest active playoff drought. Kitchens, who was promoted from running backs coach to interim offensive coordinator in 2018 before being given the top job in January, generated considerable excitement among many fans after Cleveland's offense blossomed under his guidance in the second half of last season. The offseason acquisition of Odell Beckham Jr. heightened expectations, and Kitchens said in July the team's goal "will always be to win the Super Bowl."
A 43-13 loss to the Tennessee Titans in the season opener, however, might have served as a harbinger for the franchise, when dropped to 2-6 at midseason. Even when a late-season surge seemed within reach, the Browns lost Pro Bowl defensive end Myles Garrett to an indefinite suspension for the rest of the season after the pass rusher swung Mason Rudolph's helmet at the quarterback in the final seconds of a 21-7 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Nov. 14.
Cleveland lost its final three games of the season, including a 33-23 defeat in the regular-season finale to the Cincinnati Bengals, who were previously 1-14.
“I don’t know that anybody thought that I’m a finished product," Kitchens said after Sunday's game. "Let’s keep building on what we’re doing."
Kitchens' passing offense never rediscovered the spark that ignited it last season, as quarterback Baker Mayfield was markedly less efficient than he was in his rookie campaign. Beckham, meanwhile, had his lowest yards per game total of his six-year career.
Cleveland also finished as one of the NFL's most penalized teams in 2019.
